LWLies is teaming up with HMV and Optimum Releasing to offer our readers the chance to design the DVD cover for Paul King’s excellent Bunny and the Bull. The winning artwork will become HMV’s exclusive Bunny and the Bull cover, and will be on sale in all their stores nationwide.

Our first creative brief, to design a cover for our Where The Wild Things are issue, showed us that there’s an astonishing wealth of creative people reading LWLies. This time, the winning piece of work will actually be making its way out into the world, so it’s time to step up your game and show us what you can do.

The winner will be chosen by LWLies, HMV and Optimum along with Bunny and the Bull director Paul King.

Please email your entries (JPG/PDF) to bunny@thechurchoflondon.com (Please email low-res files – the winner will be asked to send a high-res version). The deadline for entries is 6pm on Friday January 29 2010. The DVD will be out March 29.

Note: Please read the competition terms and conditions before submitting your entry.

Here are the full instructions. Please read them carefully, as entries with missing elements won’t be eligible to win.

Instructions

- If you’ve not seen the film already, check the trailer and official website to get a feel for it.

- Then download this template as a guide, and please note the 3mm bleed on all sides that your image should stretch over for printing purposes, but that won’t be visible on the final artwork. Try to keep any important information away from the edge of the cover, as denoted by the red rectangle.

- Use whatever medium you like. Feel free to chop up the images in PhotoShop, and create original illustrations with any tools at your disposal. Let the film’s unique aesthetic inspire you!

- Make sure you keep important parts of the design out of the grey box at the bottom, in which various logos will sit. Best to make it an uncomplicated area of your design, like a flat colour.

- Download these seven images and use them as you please in your design. You can do anything you like with them, but try to keep as many of the film’s characters in there as possible.

- Check out the film’s poster artwork to get an idea of how the pros at All City have gone about juggling the following written elements, and then ensure that you include ALL of these pieces of info:

“From the director of The Mighty Boosh”

“Bunny and The Bull”

“Edward Hogg, Simon Farnaby, Verónica Echegui, Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt, Richard Ayoade” (These don’t need to be in a line separated by commas – they all just need to be present).

To confirm, ALL of the above should be worked into your DVD cover, with obvious emphasis on the film’s title.

You can also include this quote, if you wish. This is the only optional element.

‘Sharp–tongued, emotionally honest and above all, very, very funny’ ****
Matt Bochenski, Little White Lies

That’s it!

If you have any questions, post them here and we’ll clarify.

Now go get creative!

  • The guys who made the poster had better photos/source material to work with to produce their design than the photos we have been provided with here in the link. Can we have the same pictures or better pictures, if you compare the shots in the poster (good) with the poor ones in the link – it is starting out handicapped in my opinion. Bunny-bull-7 is the only one that is the same, the rest have bad angles, lighting etc…but that is probably why the guys who did the poster did not use any of them, yet we are stuck with them…this will be a bit of a turd- polishing exercise I'm sorry to say.

  • When you say ANY medium, and they go onto photoshop.. Do you mean literally any medium? E.g paint and then scan it in?

Written by Emz on January 17th, 2010 at 13:59

  • Absolutely! As long as you can scan it, then you can use anything you like. Good luck!

  • Is there any kind of graphic profile to follow? Recommended fonts to use etc?

Written by Hell on January 21st, 2010 at 15:02

  • Can it be a group project or must only one person work on the artwork?

Written by Mark on January 25th, 2010 at 16:05

  • It's fine for more than one person to get involved, Mark.

    Written by LWLies_Danny on January 25th, 2010 at 16:11

  • Nope, you can pursue whatever creative path you see fit, and use whichever fonts you like.

  • We wanted to keep this brief tight, Joe, and the most important thing is – everyone has the same materials to work with. Past that, think of it as a challenge. This ain't no turd polish – it's a fantastically open brief!
