Michael Haneke’s English language Funny Games remake is definitely in the ‘awesome movies you don’t need to see twice category’.
We gave it the thumbs up in the new issue, but one of US critic Roger Ebert’s readers felt even more, um, visceral about it…

Why did Haneke remake the exact film shot-for-shot? Seriously, I think the guy is a genius, but this is just insane. And pointless. Is the film actually any good?

Well, the original is the only film I’ve ever had to turn off because I couldn’t deal with it - and that was before it got too heavy. The family dog was the only character who’d had a really bad time, by that point.
In other words, whether you think it’s good or bad, it’s bound to mess with your head a bit. Approach with caution, based on your capacity for handling extreme nastiness.
As to why he re-made it… I’d say because so few Americans watch subtitled films. It’s the Yanks he’s gunning for, innit?
