Kick-Ass Creative Brief

Kick-Ass Creative Brief

Sink your teeth into a new Creative Brief for the Kick-Ass issue. It's comic book time!

Related reviews and interviews

So, we can exclusively reveal the next LWLies cover film is Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, starring Aaron Johnson, which opens in the UK on Friday April 2.

Based on Mark Millar’s comic-book series, Kick-Ass is the story of Dave Lizewski. An otherwise ordinary New York City high school student, Dave’s only superpower is invisibility to girls, but when he takes his interest in comic books as inspiration to become a real-life superhero, Kick-Ass is born.

If you haven’t already, check out the trailer.

We’re asking you to take your favourite film and re-imagine it for us in the form of a comic, within a six-frame panel (download template files). That’s the whole film, condensed into six frames.

Instructions:

• All entries must be black and white. No grayscale may be used – we’re looking for a traditional comic book style. Please use whatever media you see fit.

• All entries should be sent to kickass@thechurchoflondon.com as 300dpi JPGs or Tiffs, full size, (all downloadable templates are the correct size) or they won’t be good enough quality to print in the magazine. If your finished artwork is too large to email, please use a file transfer site such as YouSendit.

• You must stick to our template exactly, not breaking down the boxes or altering the format.

• The brief is open to interpretation, so it can be literal or more skewed, if you prefer. So long as it tells the full story of one film, in a manner that would be pretty much coherent to someone who’d never seen it, we’re happy.

We’ll need your entries in at 6.00pm on Friday Febuary 12.

Be creative – be awesome – blow our minds. The best entry will make a full page in the front of the issue, while all the rest of our favourite entries will be made into a special 16 page digital edition of LWLies.

Any questions, email kickass@thechurchoflondon.com.

*** UPDATE ***

Q. You didn’t mention it, but are entries allowed to have word balloons, or is it just completely silent, sequential art?
A. Yes, please use balloons, sound effect type, whatever graphic devices you see fit!

Q. Also, the rules state no grayscaling. Does that include screentones/zip-a-tones that manga comics often utilize, or is that just referring to actual grayscaled tones (like in the Walking Dead comics)?
A. Screentones and zipatones are perfect.

If you have any questions about the brief, please post them in the comments below.

  • Great brief, thanks guys! Also a comic book styled Little White Lies is a mouth-watering prospect. Can't wait to see it!

  • bit disappointed. the chance that the movie gets mediocre is in my opion way to high and the trailers not tooo promising.

  • Can you move/change the frames around within the page or do you have to use this exact layout?

Written by Steve Rider on January 29th, 2010 at 12:49

  • How many entries per person? I have more than one favourite film!

Written by Vicky on January 29th, 2010 at 13:30

  • Steve, you can't move the frames i'm afraid. Vicky, as many entries as you like!

  • The template download isnt working for me when I try to extract, is there another way of getting my hands on it?

    Thanks

Written by kreepyglen on January 30th, 2010 at 13:54

  • When the brief says the whole film considered in 6 frames, I am assuming you are allowed to change the story? or does it need to follow the original movie?

Written by Kev on February 1st, 2010 at 15:58

  • Hi kreepyglen,

How are you trying to extract the zip file?

Written by LWLies on February 2nd, 2010 at 10:05

  • You have complete freedom to do whatever you want to the story – however someone who has never seen the film needs to be able to get the story from the six panels.

  • can we extend the artwork outside the frames a bit, or it has to be strictly within them?

Written by Daniel on February 2nd, 2010 at 18:16

  • are curse words allowed or do they need to be censored?

    thanks

Written by robert on February 3rd, 2010 at 19:31

  • Hi Daniel, please keep your artwork within the frames – just to keep things tidy.

Written by LWLies on February 3rd, 2010 at 21:43

  • Hi Robert,

Curse words are allowed but anything we consider to be truly offensive (not a great deal) or just plain wrong might get censored or rejected.

  • Any restrictions on reversing the colour of the page to white panels on black? Also, if I keep the diamensions of the panels the same can I redraw the panels to give the page a less rigid, freehnd feel?

    Cheers.

Written by Jason on February 4th, 2010 at 12:01

  • Hi Jason,

No reversal of page colours or redrawing of panels, please. We'd like everyone to stick to the template to
    keep things fair.

  • Is there any sort of confirmation that you have received a submission? I submitted one a few days back and have had no confirmation you have received it………

Written by ivan Longland on February 4th, 2010 at 14:36

  • Hi Ivan,

I can confirm that we have indeed received your submission.

  • I have a windows vista laptop (Inspiron) and I can't open the template… any advice or alternatives greatly appreciated

Written by Sorcha on February 5th, 2010 at 17:38

  • Hi Sorcha – the zip folder is a standard zip folder, so it shouldn't matter what operating system you're on.

In Windows Vista you can extract the files by right-clicking the zipped file and select 'Extract all'. The 'Select a Destination' and 'Extract Files' window will open and let you choose if you want to save the files in the same location as the original zipped file.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks so much LWLies, that worked perfect. I appreciate the quick reply!

Written by Sorcha on February 5th, 2010 at 18:13

  • Oh, one more question if you don't mind… I'm trying to fit all of my chosen movie clearly and concisely into only six panels, and I'm really struggling! Can you just select one thread of the storyline, or do you have to capture all that happens? For example, if a storyline features unrequieted love and bullying as two major storylines, can you chose to just portray one from the beginning to the end? I hope that you understand my question!

Written by Sorcha on February 5th, 2010 at 18:41

  • Is it possible to alter the look of the panel frames without altering their size? They are a bit regular for what I’m doing and I’d like to make them a bit scrappier without altering their size, shape or layout in any way- is this allowable?

Written by Bruce on February 6th, 2010 at 16:06

  • … how many times can you enter?

Written by Sorcha on February 6th, 2010 at 21:34

  • Hi Sorcha,

You can submit as many entries as you like.

  • Can I split the large boxes in to sections? or must it be one single image within the frame?

Written by carlos garde-martin on February 10th, 2010 at 11:10

  • We'd like everyone to stick to the 6 panel template (one single image within each frame) to keep things fair.

    Written by LWLies_Anna_ on February 10th, 2010 at 11:24

  • Ok thanks for clearing that up :)

Written by carlos garde-martin on February 10th, 2010 at 11:56

  • Do the word balloons have to stay within the frames too or are those allowed to go over the edges?

Written by Malcolm on February 10th, 2010 at 22:59

  • Hi Malcolm,

Keep everything within the frames, please.

    Written by LWLies_Anna_ on February 11th, 2010 at 10:24

  • are we allowed to flip the template upside down (as long as its still portrait format) so that the larger/smaller panels work better with the story? ie upside down it starts on a larger panel and ends on a smaller one.

Written by max on February 11th, 2010 at 13:56

  • Hi Max,

We'd like everyone just to stick the template and leave the panels the original way up.

    Written by LWLies_Anna_ on February 11th, 2010 at 14:53

  • Okay. Thanks.

Written by Malcolm on February 11th, 2010 at 15:42

  • Hi anna

can you confirm that my entry has been submitted? my email is touchred@gmail.com

    thanks

Written by TouchRed on February 12th, 2010 at 09:48

  • hi LWL

i've already submitted my comic but have just realised that some of the speach bubbles slighty leave the frame.

    do i need to re-submit?

    thanks

Written by TouchRed on February 12th, 2010 at 09:50

  • No, that's ok, we just wanted to retain as much uniformity of layout between the entries as possible – to keep things fair.

    Written by LWLies_Anna_ on February 12th, 2010 at 10:19

  • Hi,

Yes, we have your entry, thanks.

    Written by LWLies_Anna_ on February 12th, 2010 at 10:37

  • Okay I've just entered – is anyone putting their entries online so we can all look at them? (perhaps after the deadline has passed…)

    Written by @jackdraws on February 12th, 2010 at 11:14

  • I'm excited to see the entries, will we be able to?
