LWLies 18 is complete, and it’s awesome. Gracing our cover this issue is the wonderful Man On Wire. We hope you like our cover, which is both psychadelic and very shiny. Some people don’t really like it when we have shiny covers but, well, we just like to mix it up a bit.
If we were replaced by robots and asked to tell you about the content of the new issue in the style of a press release, we’d probably say something mechanical like:
LWLies 18 is out now, with the most authentic and passionate movie criticism on the market.
Shane Meadows takes us to Somers Town; Tom McCarthy greets The Visitor; Frank Darabont emerges from The Mist; Guy Maddin stakes his claim to My Winnipeg; and Andrei Zvyagintsev returns from The Banishment. It’s do-or-die with William Friedkin, John Boorman, Asif Kapadia and Harmony Korine; Philippe Petit invites us in to the helter-skelter world of the high wire; we get hot under the collar for big, bulging buildings; enter the space race with parachutist Steve Truglia; paint a visual portrait of classic stunt moments; and ask whether CGI has become CG-nay. All this plus exclusive interviews with cinematic big hitters from Olivier Assayas to Nic Roeg via Tom McCarthy and Guy Maddin.
If we were being normal we’d likely just take a break for a few days, hope that you liked LWLies 18, and then crack on with issue 19, the cover movie of which we still can’t decide on. In fact, if you have
any suggestions please do let us know.

Pineapple Express!
… slightly silly, but it tosses up some good themes to run with…
Drugs in movies (good/bad/dangerous)
The appeal of the buddy film
The new frat pack/Judd Apatow effect (slightly overdone perhaps, but there must be a new angle)
Why are indie directors such as Greg Mottola and David Gordon Green whoring themselves for Apatow?

Was slightly weirded out to find that some of my (more thoughtless) blog comments had been published on the letter page of this issue. Didn’t realise that was going to happen! Slightly unnerved, but not annoyed.
A good issue - the graphics are looking sweet (though in places they render some of the text illegible), and the articles are, again, punchy without being shallow. The theme of “Risks” is an interesting one.
I have some issues with your “comic book films” article, but I’ll maybe send a letter in about that instead. As long as I’m being printed, I might as well try and get letter of the month!
Cheers guys.
