Seth Rogen was forced to cut a ‘hardcore drug scene’ from Pineapple Express after board members from the BBFC deemed it too explicit for British viewers.
The scene in question shows Rogen selling marijuana to high school kids and smoking it with them. It was kept in for Pineapple Express’ American release, but the film was given an NC-17 in the States, whereas it was passed with a 15-rating over here, after the scene was edited.
He jokily stated that the production team were “more responsible in the UK than in the States”, but added that they “had no moral obligation” at all with the film.
If the ‘top secret’ board members at the BBFC are anything like those on the MPAA (as revealed in Kirby Dick’s eye-opening documentary This Film is Not Yet Rated – definitely worth your perusal) then it’s no surprise that a group of parents would find such a mild scene so offensive.
But they won’t stop kids from sneaking in to see the film. In the words of Rogen himself, “I’ve been seeing R-rated movies since I was 12 years old and I’m okay!”
