Flatpack Festival 2010 kicks off in classic style in Birmingham tonight, with an opening gala screening of FW Murnau’s 1927 Hollywood debut, Sunrise, which is proceeded by a celebration of film culture in all its forms. From silent cinema re-scored, cult classics re-imagined to archive material re-invented, Flatpack will be the driving cultural force across Birmingham for the next six days.
Before Harmony Korine’s Trash Humpers closes the festival on Sunday 28, there are several programme highlights that we thought we’d earmark nice and early with the LWLies Recommends seal.
First up on Friday 26 is Unpacked, Flatpack’s show and tell day at the Bond in the heart of Brum. Running from 10.30am through to late afternoon, the event offers audiences a unique chance to inspect the cogs and gears on show in the festival programme. A range of filmmakers and artists will talk about how they make work, and how they go about getting it out into the world. The day will also include sessions on puppets, outdoor projections and plagiarism.
Following Unpacked, Dublin-based experimental band Synth Eastwood will present Fast Forward; a stew of music, animation and eye-popping interactivity. Special guests will supply accompanying live music at the Rainbow Warehouse until 03.00am, with a host of artists presenting animations and performances throughout the night.
Tickets for both these events and more are available now from flatpackfestival.org and you can keep up to date with the festival by following @flatpack on Twitter and checking back here for blog updates from the festival.
