Bleak Moments is Mike Leigh’s debut feature film, a haunting and disturbing study of a young woman’s isolation in the late 1960’s.
Sylvia (Anne Raitt) leads a very quiet life caring for her mentally ill sister Hilda (Sarah Stevenson) and yearns for companionship. First released in 1971, this contains all the style and themes that would go on to categorise Leigh’s work - the working classes, convention, secrecy and family life wrapped up in social realism.
