Henry Selick film still

When offered the chance to interview legendary animator Henry Selick, of course we said 'yes'. Even if it meant our editor's ugly mug (dis)gracing the camera.

It isn't part of our branded LWLies TV, but we're proud to present a filmed interview with the director of Coraline.

Completely agree that Coraline is a mile ahead of Monsters Vs. Aliens - but my six-year-olds *strongly* disagree... Kids, huh - what do they know about children's films, anyway?

My son was so terrified by Coraline (especially what one might call, to avoid spoilers, the more spidery scenes) that he wanted to exit the cinema, and declared (out loud): "I HATE this movie!" I think this might call for a Peeping Tom-style regime of fright therapy to inure him to the horrors of cinema/the world...

My nephew is also six and I'm intrigued to see what his reaction is. Your shock therapy idea might work, I'm thinking about doing the same thing with musicals as he flat out refuses to watch any...the black sheep of the family.

He's spot on about there being an appetite for stories that aren't just sequels or similar to other types of animation films. I saw Monsters vs Aliens a few days before seeing Coraline and left feeling totally bored and unentertained by it. Coraline on the other hand was just a joy from beginning to end and I will be seeing it again with my wee nephew tonight who'll either love it or be terrified. Good for pushing him on Tim Burton also, NBC is one of my favourite childhood films and always thought it was his and only his work.

P.S. That is indeed a cool top, however it doesn't hold a candle to his Incredible Hulk tee...

...and that's a mighty fine T-shirt, too, Matt. Who says that children's animation has no room for politics?

Crackin little interview and totally agree with his view on people wanting better stories. You can quibble about 2D, stop motion and 3D all you want... but if the story isn't there, it ain't gotta chance.

'Kids, huh - what do they know about children's films, anyway?' - SPOT ON ANTON! :-P

Subjecting him to the traumas of horror is one thing, but musicals? Now that's just cruel...
