could have a huge career as this generation’s Julia Roberts – sexy enough for the boys, but goofy enough for the girls. She’s the best thing by miles in 27 Dresses, giving an unselfconscious performance as Jane, a serial bridesmaid forced to watch the man of her dreams get hitched to her wayward sister. But once again, a talented star is let down by the limitations of a listless genre. The message of 27 Dresses is that independent career women aren’t really happy unless they’ve got a man to make them feel good. It’s exactly the sort of gormless hypocrisy that’s destroying the modern rom-com, but until its core audience show some sign of raising their standards, they’ll continue to get the duds they deserve.
