Definitely, Maybe is knob cheese. Let’s qualify: it’s a rom-com for blokes. It’s fromage for men. It’s knob cheese. Ryan Reynolds is extremely likeable as the divorcing dad telling his daughter (Abigail Breslin) a bedtime story; a guessing game about which woman from three simultaneous love affairs becomes her mother. But whether this is suitable reading for a minor is massively open to question – just how did writer-director Adam Brooks justify a smoking contest and sex in front of an 11–year-old? More relevant, however, is how this film suggests that Hollywood is ready to take on the changing approaches in contemporary relationships and parenting. We are the ‘anything goes’, ever more emotionally complicated generation, and it’s high time our cinema reflected it.
