Will Smith has, against the odds, moved beyond the point in his career where his films would be improved by a comedy cameo from Jazzy Jeff, and he puts in an above average performance in this surprisingly pensive take on the zombie apocalypse genre that focusses on the day to-day trivialities and mental degeneration that go along with being the last man alive in a world full of poorly rendered flesh eaters. The undead themselves are surprisingly few and far between, in fact the supporting act for the majority of the film is Smith’s dog (who’s pretty good, actually). Smith works diligently to find a cure, and eventually comes across some other survivors, but the film is stymied by a rushed denouement and shoe-horned quasi-religious message that is awkward and inappropriately didactic.
