Thai auteur Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s latest is a richly rewarding Godardian hall-of-mirrors which comprises a series of roughly hewn vignettes stitched into a vast blanket of meandering dialogue and set in two provincial Thai hospitals. Ironic juxtapositions abound, with the glass-and-concrete confines of the hospital off-set by the tropical idyll outside, a Buddhist monk who wants to be a DJ and a staff nurse offering scientific analysis to another Buddhist monk who is being kept awake with dreams about chickens. The film’s dreamy atmosphere is served well by clinical, immaculately framed camerawork and an ambient soundtrack which continually bubbles underneath the surface.
