In his previous life, Sam Neil’s cleric lived as a spaniel; when plied with his favourite booze, he goes misty-eyed and recounts the pleasures of worrying sheep. Fisk Junior (Jeremy Northam) believes that the dean may be able to help his father (Peter O’Toole) – a cantankerous old bugger who refuses to grieve the death of his son, having previously lost a beloved dog. This is the rather ludicrous setup for Toa Fraser’s Edwardian comedy; if it’s a premise you can swallow, you’ll probably enjoy the whole ripping yarn. The banter is quietly pithy, and the daft story eventually builds to a surprisingly moving conclusion – thanks largely to yet another masterful turn from O’Toole.

Sounds like a bad acid tip – and therefore worth watching.

This film was brilliant! Peter O’Toole hilarious, it’s not a showy film, and that makes the story all the more rewarding, very well done.
