Holy Water is a gentle comedic affirmation of rural Irish living, and as such, it has a few moments that will put a smile on your face. But on the whole, these fail to pave over the cracks. From the tagline (‘An Amusing Comedy’) onwards, Tom Reeve’s film does nothing to counteract the creeping feeling that life is short, and should be spent wisely.

Based around the badly-advised travails of four cheeky up-to-no-gooders from the middle of nowhere, this is pretty amateur stuff. Using intensely inoffensive, middle-brow BBC sitcoms like Last of the Summer Wine, Father Ted and Ballykissangel as primary influences is never a good idea for a comedy based around the sexual benefits of Viagara, and Holy Water fails fatally. It has as much edge as a lump of margarine, and is as sexy as a smear test.

Low-budget and middle-of-the-road, but could be enjoyable. Anticipation Score

Enjoyment:

After a tame start, things get desperate pretty fast. Enjoyment Score

In Retrospect:

Makes good films look better. In Retrospect Score

  • Lumping Father Ted in with Last of the Summer Wine and Ballykissangel is a tad harsh (a priest kicking a bishop up the arse was surely a little bit edgy in 1998?) but judging by that trailer I'm sure the rest of your review is spot on.
