In these times of financial hardship, it’s hard to earn a quick buck. So best friends Zack and Miri decide to do so with a quick… well, the title gives it away doesn’t it? This latest outing from Kevin Smith shows that at 38 he’s lost no appetite for sex gags, buckets of swearing, and the romantic pairing of hairy chubby guys like Seth Rogen (Zack) with blonde beauties like Elizabeth Banks (Miri). But if it ain’t broke and you try to fix it, you end up with Jersey Girl – a lesson for us all. What it lacks in surprises, Zack and Miri makes up for with nob gags and a good cast, including Smith stalwart Jason Mewes, a camped-up Justin Long and porn star Traci Lords with an interesting line in bubble blowing. It’s only when Zack and Miri start wearing their hearts on their sleeves that things get less exciting, but isn’t that the same with all relationships?

Anticipation:

Solid comic credentials, though Smith is more miss than hit. Anticipation Score

Enjoyment:

Not quite as funny as it needed to be. Enjoyment Score2

In Retrospect:

It's time for Smith to change the record. In Retrospect Score

  • I saw this at the weekend and it was alright, but I couldn’t help but be a little bit disappointed. My unwavering loyalty to Kevin Smith finally seems to be wavering. I found myself being annoyed by the cheapness of the font used for the opening titles – God knows why this really irked me, but it did (maybe I’m becoming a bit obsessed with fonts in movies – I HATED the cheesy location titles used in Quantum of Solace). In fact, cheapness just seemed to be a running theme. I laughed, of course. I always will because Smith is a good writer and this silly loyalty I have is going to see me through at least one or two more entries in his oeuvre, but the romance never seemed believeable and I just can’t shake the feeling of disappointment that Kevin Smith could do something a lot more interesting with his talents.
